Military Time Conversion Chart
Military time runs from 0000 (midnight) to 2359 (11:59 PM) with no AM/PM and no colon in written form. Midnight is 0000, not 2400, and noon is 1200. To convert any PM hour, add 12; to convert a military hour past 1200, subtract 12.
Military time is the 24-hour clock: it counts straight through from 0000 at midnight to 2359 just before the next midnight, with no AM or PM and no colon in written form. Hospitals, the armed forces, emergency services, and a lot of shift-based operations use it specifically because “0800” and “2000” can’t be confused with each other the way “8:00” can, whether that means morning or night depends on context you might not have.
The math is simple once you know the rule. To go from standard to military time, any time before noon stays the same, just written as a four-digit number: 8:00 AM becomes 0800. Any PM time gets 12 added to the hour: 2:00 PM becomes 1400. Midnight is 0000, not 2400, and noon is 1200. To go the other direction, any military hour of 1300 or higher gets 12 subtracted and becomes PM; anything below 1200 stays the same number and becomes AM, with 0000 read as 12:00 AM.
Use the calculator above for either direction, or the full chart below for quick lookup of every hour on the clock.
If you’re working with payroll exports that show hours as decimals instead of hours and minutes, our decimal to time calculator handles that conversion the same way.
