FREE Military Time Converter

Military time is a 24-hour timekeeping format that numbers every hour of the day from 0 to 23, rather than repeating 1 through 12 twice with AM and PM labels. It’s written as four digits, hour and minute, with no colon: 3:45 PM is written 1545.

If the military time is 1200 or below, it’s already the same number, just add AM (with 0000 read as 12:00 AM and 1200 as 12:00 PM/noon). If it’s above 1200, subtract 12 and add PM: 1930 minus 12 is 7:30, so 1930 is 7:30 PM.

For AM times, drop the colon and add a leading zero if needed: 6:15 AM becomes 0615. For PM times, add 12 to the hour first: 6:15 PM becomes 1815.

Midnight at the start of a day is written 0000. 2400 is sometimes used informally to mean the very end of a day (as in a schedule that runs “through 2400”), but as a specific point in time, 0000 is the standard.

Because a shift, a medication schedule, or an incident report often needs to be read unambiguously by someone who wasn’t there when it happened. “0200” is always 2 AM and “1400” is always 2 PM, there’s no room for the kind of AM/PM mix-up that can matter when the stakes are a patient’s medication timing or an official incident log.
